President Enrique Peña Nieto delivered more than 1,400 restored and reconstructed homes which were affected on May 25 by the passage of a tornado in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila.
Peña Nieto toured the streets of the Altos de Santa Teresa neighborhood, where he visited some homes and reminded the people that on the day of the tragedy he promised not to leave them alone and to work to restore their homes.
“The people’s joy is the best evidence that we are fulfilling the promise of helping them. It’s a totally different situation than when the tornado hit and there was only sadness,” he said.
Accompanied by Coahuila Gov. Rubén Moreira Valdez, National Defense Secretary Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda and Agricultural, Land and Urban Development Secretary Rosario Robles Berlanga, Peña Nieto recalled the day when the tornado hit. The president arrived to the affected municipality as quickly as possible accompanied by federal and state authorities, where he found deployed armed forces members already providing support to families.
Acknowledging the work of the soldiers who where present that day and helped those affected, as well as federal and state officials who worked on the remodeling and rehabilitation of the area, Peña Nieto said that he arrived to oversee the delivery of the works, including recreation areas and cultural and social centers.
The National Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) will open a permanent attention branch in the city, which will follow up on the support tasks and the completion of works such as the community development center, the library and recreation spaces, said Peña Nieto.
